I have a few funny jw wedding stories.
The first is what happened at my ex-husband's wedding. He remarried only 6 months after our divorce and so I guess the brother who gave the marriage talk hadn't quite recovered because when he announced the new couple to the congregation, he announced my name rather than the new bride's. She was mortified. Tee hee.
I attended a jw wedding where the brother who gave the talk focused his whole talk on the marriage of Christ to the 144,000. I don't know if he was of the "anointed" but it was the weirdest talk I'd ever heard. At the reception, during speeches, the groom thanked the speaker saying, "And thank you Brother so-and-so for that....(very long pause and wry smile)...interesting talk." There were a few muffled chuckles from the guests. I don't think the speaker had any clue.
And my last story takes place during a jw couple's first dance. They chose Shania Twain's "You've Got A Way." In the chorus, Shania sings..."It's in the way you want me, It's in the way you hold me, The way you show me just what love's made of, It's in the way we make love." At the end of that last line, the couple looked out into the crowd and said, "Not yet!" The funny thing is I've always thought they were probably a couple who engaged in some pre-marital hanky-panky so they just drew attention to the obvious for me. Too funny!

All the talk about Prince made me think about what it's like when a famous person comes to the kh. About 2 years ago, Terence Howard was in Toronto filming a movie and attended our kh. He actually studied with 2 elders while he was here. Apparently, he has jw family. Anyhow, I got to meet him, not knowing who he was at the time. Very nice. Beautiful eyes.
Most of the people in our congregation didn't know who he was so it was all very low-key. But I heard that when he attended the DC he got swarmed by young sisters looking for autographs!
Terence Howard, is an actor by the way. His first major role was as Russ, the football player who learned to play drums, in Mr. Holland's Opus. Recently, he was in Ray, Hustle and Flow, and Four Brothers.
Not really famous, but I knew a brother who acted for a living. He did commercials and did one episode of a TV show. But in that show he played a character that attended a birthday party. The elders put him on reproof for it and cast a shadow on his acting dreams. Anyhow, he gave up acting and he's at Bethel now. What a waste!

Shunning: Is it really a bad thing?
by thinker ini met my jw wife about 5 years ago.
she da'd shortly after we met and like most people i thought it was terribly strange and wrong that her family shunned her.
for the first two years of our marriage my wife would call her parents on a fairly regular basis.

I've been thinking about this alot lately. I disassociated in August and although my jw parents are still talking to me, it's been strained and distant. We're supposed to have a family meeting next week (with my non-dub brother too) and discuss "issues." My brother gave me a heads up and said my mom is still resentful about the pain I put HER through 6 years ago when I got disfellowshipped so I'm assuming our family meeting is really going to be a pity party for my mom. With the never-ending drama, I'm beginning to think that perhaps I should shun them!
I think too about my future children. I don't want them to be exposed to this religion nor my mother's craziness. Most days, I wish she would shun me. I'd still like to hold on to my Dad though. He's pretty cool.

pop superstar prince is facing painful hip surgery to help him cope with discomfort brought on by years of performing in high-heeled boots.

Oh that is too bad...well I suppose he is not wearing high heeled boots to the meetings or out in field service! He's probably only 4' 7" tall without his platforms on.
Do you think that he still wear's his make-up/lipstick to the KH? haaa
Tweety
Actually, he still does wear the high heeled boots and is still made up when he goes to the kh. He lives in Toronto and attends congregations in my area. Although I've never seen him, friends of mine have. He comes to the kh dolled up the way you know him to look. He arrives just after the song in his limo and leaves just before the meeting ends.

Keep Your Eye Simple - Special Assembly Day
by truthseeker inapparently, many of the dubs can't keep their eye simple, so they need an assembly to tell them how to do it.. youths, are you pursuing spiritual goals?
is one talk for the afternoon.

Are there any writers on here?
by PaulJ inok, i work in a dull 9-5 job that is busy but quite boring.
i guess by being a jw in the past i've been encouraged all along to be settled, work to get by.
my focus was supposed to be serving jehovah and nothing else.

I've been writing since I was about 8. I have a huge Rubbermaid container full of my writing, most of which has never seen the light of day. I write poetry and non-fiction vignettes from my life. In High School I won various writing awards. I actually took a children's writing course at one time. It's something I'd like to pursue in the future.
I like to do "free writes." Writing without any agenda. Just writing on whatever comes to my mind. It's amazing some of the stuff that comes out of that process.

You're going the thong way!
by tall penguin inso a friend told me something recently that just blew my mind.
she was interrogated by some elders regarding her choice of underwear.
she was being questionned regarding her conduct with a man and apparently her choice of undergarments reflected the level of intent in her actions.

Thanks Chester for that link. Very interesting to hear more stories.
Thanks Lady Lee for your kind words. I'm still having a difficult time with all of this. It is very cathartic to be able to talk about this subject here. I can't say I'm looking forward to the conversation with my mother. Yet I feel confident in my ability to stand up for myself now. I will no longer allow anyone to abuse me.
Thank you to everyone who posted on this thread. The support I've received so far from jwd has been overwhelming. I feel closer to the people here already than I ever did to the witnesses I knew for years.

I'm sick tonight just thinking about all of this. I'm so disgusted that I allowed elders into the most private and intimate of my experiences and feelings. I feel very raw and battered right now.
I was speaking to my brother last night and apparently my mother is stewing about how I hurt her when I got disfellowshipped 6 years ago and how awful I am that I'm putting HER through this again now that I've disassociated. And I'm quite angry that my mother has the nerve to be upset and resentful towards me for this, when she's the crazy who chose this f-ed up religion to begin with! I'd love to see how she'd fare if she had to face a judicial committee!
It all just makes me ill.

IS THIS WHY ELDERS ARE SO EGOTISTICAL??
by chuckyy ini have this theory.. someone once said to me.....' its no good coming into the truth if you are a sensitive person.'.
i have found in my experience as a former elder that a lot of elders have very large egos.
my theory is this:.

One of my favourite elders is a humble man. What I term a "heart person." He's an elder for the right reasons and he suffers because of it. He's about 62 now and he told me not too long ago that when he stepped down from being the congregation secretary and bookstudy overseer because of health problems (heart problems--no coincidence there!) another elder (he didn't name names) told him, "Well, you've served your purpose." My elder friend was so discouraged by this. There were tears in his eyes as he told me.
This elder also stood up for me on many occasions. One time he corrected a DO who took a pot shot at me because I wasn't pioneering. Not all elders are narcissistic megalomaniacs. Some are actually "shepherds."
